Lesson 7 of 7, about 3 minutes

What to do when something looks wrong

Nobody spots every scam. What you do next matters most.

Nobody spots every scam. What matters is what you do next.

If you are not sure

  1. Do not click, open or reply.
  2. Check another way, for example by phone.
  3. Report it to your IT provider or manager. If we look after your IT, forward the message to support@nexusitservices.org or send a screenshot in a ticket.
  4. Delete it once you have reported it.

If you clicked or typed something

  1. Tell your IT provider or manager right away, before you do anything else.
  2. Change your password, from a different device if you can.
  3. If a file downloaded, turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable.
  4. Write down what happened and roughly when.

Make reporting easy

A business where people report quickly is far safer than one where people hide mistakes. Thank every person who reports, even when it turns out to be a false alarm.

Good to know

Report first and ask questions later. A false alarm costs a minute. A hidden mistake can cost a great deal.
